Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) can distinguish asbestos fibers from other fibers and is able to detect very thin fibers. This method provides the most complete analysis of asbestos fibers available at this time. Under the EPA's AHERA Regulations, air samples used for the clearance of asbestos containment areas must be analyzed using TEM. TEM is sometimes used on a limited basis for the verification of PLM Analysis in critical situations.
